Foster Youth Will Walk the Runway in June 2018

April 20, 2018

Celebrations, Community, Foster Care & Adoption

HeartShare St. Vincent’s Slay the Runway show features original designs and choreography that empowers our youth in care.

“Every time I come back to a practice, I feel my confidence has grown,” said Alicia, who will participate in the upcoming HeartShare St. Vincent’s Services Slay Tre Fashion Show on Thursday, June 7th at the Prince George Ballroom. The show features and benefits young men and women in foster care.

“This is more than just a fashion show. During their six week workshop with Melody Centeno, American Dream Program alum and founder of Foster Care Unplugged, our models not only learn the catwalk and confidence, but have access to a supportive community, where they can express themselves,” said Dawn Saffayeh, Executive Director of HeartShare St. Vincent’s Services.

New York City designers and stylists create original pieces and looks for our models. From customized t-shirts to evening gowns, young men and women in care look forward to this event each year. The event has been featured on the cover of Foster Focus magazine.

HSVS specializes in nurturing the potential of those in foster care and the runway offers models confidence at college and on the job. Kathryn, who has been practicing for the upcoming fashion show, said, “I learned to be patient and to work with others. It’s been great bonding with everyone here and getting to know them.”

“From designers to volunteers, an entire community of support comes together to make this event a success each year. We ask you to buy tickets, donate, become a sponsor, and invite your friends,” added Saffayeh. “There are so many ways you can help.”
